Untukmu Yang Wisuda Hari Ini…

Untukmu Yang Wisuda Hari Ini,

Ingatkah 4 atau 5 tahun silam, ketika engkau masih berseragam putih abu

Masihkah citamu seperti dahulu, sekedar menjadi manusia berguna dan masuk surga

Pastikan semangatmu masih semuda waktu itu, ketika apapun rintangan tak menghalangi tekadmu mencari  ilmu

Hingga suratan mengantarmu ke gerbang kampus biru

KAPAN BISA KESANA? AHHH…

A Carpet of flowers at the foot of Mount Fuji…
The Fuji “Shiba-sakura” festival is a form of Japanese “flower viewing” festival held sometime during April and May when the flowers are blossoming. Incredible carpets of small red, white, pink and purple flowers bloom as far as the eye can see with the awesome Mount Fuji acting as a backdrop.

Happy May Day! No, I’m not talking about the celebration of spring, like in the film Wicker Man, today is about honoring the international labor and left-wing movements from around the world. It all started in Chicago on May 1, 1886 when unionists, reformers, socialists, anarchists and workers got together to fight for the eight-hour day. The Haymarket Massacre, which occurred after an unknown person threw a bomb at police as they dispersed a public assembly during a general strike and eight of the unionists were found guilty, has been remembered ever since as a day to honor those fighting for the rights of all workers.

The Chicago History Museum has a great collection of items related to the events, including this cabinet card photograph, published by the David Bradley Manufacturing Company a year or two after the riot. Many portraits were made during and after the trial. This one is a composite showing the views of the three buildings near Haymarket Square: Grief’s Hall, Crane’s Manufacturing Company and David Bradley (the company who made the card). Along with the portraits of the men convicted in the trial (from left to right: August Spies, Louis Lingg, Samuel Fielden, Adolph Fischer, George Engel, Oscar Neebe, Michael Schwab, and A. R. Parsons) there is also a view of a Haymarket alley with a label: “place where the bomb was thrown.”

Happy February 29th! Leap Year happens every four years so make that shit count by doing something really really important today, like wasting an extra hour or two on the internet. That’s what I plan to do.

Apparently there are no Leap Year Museums. Disappointment all around. I was going to make my own little museum and teach you guys all about official Leap Year History, like how the planet’s year is actually 365.24219 days long and Julius Caesar fixed all the calendar confusion by adding a day and only 5 million babies miss out on annual drama queen birthday cakes, but my shitty old computer ate my words and swept them under a dusty floppy disk. Oh well, you get the picture.

Instead I bring you Miniatürk, one of the world’s largest miniature parks! Is it possible to be large and small all at the same time? Maybe this guy knows. Anyway, who cares about seeing the real thing when you have its teeny tiny version. Over half of the 105 models (1/25th scale) are structures found in Istanbul. So save some money and just go to Miniatürk. Besides there are other historic treats like the Temple of Artemis and the Mausoleum of Maussollos as well as recreations of modern things like airports and highways. So again save your money…cancel the car rental and plane ticket…just go straight to Miniatürk.

This place has nothing to do with Leap Year, but we are all need an escape from our lives…I mean how I am going to get through this extra day without looking at shit like an outdoor museum full of miniature buildings? Seriously.

MIT Daedalus

The MIT Aeronautics and Astronautics Department’s Daedalus was a human-powered aircraft that, on 23 April 1988, flew a distance of 71.5 mi (115.11 km) in 3 hours, 54 minutes, from Iraklion on the island of Crete to the island of Santorini. The flight holds official FAI world records for distance and duration for human-powered aircraft.
